Airbyte claims to be open source in many parts of their website and GitHub repo.
Airbyte’s codebase is mixed license which defaults to the “Elastic License 2.0”. The license prevents:
- Provision to third parties as a hosting or managed service.
- Modification/circumvention of any license key mechanisms.
This was a change they made back in 2021.
Existing conversations had been started in January and September 2022 to query the license. As of June 2025 there had been no response to either.
Airbyte has received hundreds of millions of dollars in VC funding. Known investors include: Altimeter Capital, Coatue Management, Thrive Capital, Salesforce Ventures, Benchmark, Accel, and SV Angel.
