is it really FOSS?

Dokploy

A platform as a service for applications

Issues exist
There's some FOSS code here, but there are licensing, marketing or transparency issues.

Details

Most of the project is provided under an Apache License 2.0, with some parts in directories with certain names provided under a non-FOSS source available license which limits use, modification and distribution.

The terms and conditions found in their repository still state the below which is in conflict with their license:

It is important to note that any commercial resale or redistribution of Dokploy as a service is strictly forbidden without explicit consent. This prohibition ensures the preservation of Dokploy’s open-source character for the benefit of the entire community.

As of review, there are 9 non-FOSS ‘proprietary’ folders in the project containing 23 code files.

A quick search of the codebase indicates that there are many instances of the FOSS code relying on the non-FOSS code.

The project was previously provided under an Apache License 2.0 with additional terms which were difficult to understand in use, and these were raised with the maintainer, but they confirmed they’d like to retain this approach. They later changed their license setup in 2026.

The project is marketed as open source on its website, repository and marketing.

The project appears to be funded from providing the software as a service, selling an enterprise variant, and they also take donations, including via the Open Source Collective.
