is it really FOSS?

Langfuse

LLM engineering platform

Issues exist
There's FOSS code here, but there's issues around licensing, marketing, or transparency.

Details

The project is licensed mostly as MIT, mixed with some parts under an non-FOSS enterprise license.

From a search, the project appears to rely on non-FOSS code elements within the FOSS code.

This was queried on Reddit, with somewhat gaslighting responses, when asked about the ability to run the MIT code alone, stating that:

none of the EE features is functional when running the software in the repo as is without an EE license key

But the issue and query is not about functionality, but reliance on that non-FOSS code.

The project also announced they were “Doubling Down on Open Source” by “open sourcing all remaining Product Features in Langfuse under the MIT license”, but this was not evident in the code as the above mentioned issues still existed. This was queried on Reddit without response.

The project markets itself as open source in it’s GitHub description, project readme, and on its website where there’s also a dedicated open source page.

The project appears to have raised $4m in funding from investors including YC, Lightspeed Venture Partners and La Famiglia. The project also appears to gain revenue from paid variants and from providing the software as a service.
