The project is provided under an AGPLv3 license. The project was started in 2016 as a fork of the ownCloud project.

There are a lot of optional components/addons for the project. From a quick look through all those advertised with “Nextcloud” branding, which are featured on top-level pages of the Nextcloud site, these do appear to be provided under FOSS licenses. The project provides a “Nextcloud Flow” automation feature that looks to be an integration of Windmill which we’ve found to have some considerable licence-clarity issues.

The project appears to gain funding from a partner program (hosting & support providers), from selling “Nextcloud Enterprise” (an enterprise focused configuration and distribution channel for the software) and from providing support services.
