is it really FOSS?

OpenAlternative

List of open source alternatives

Issues exist
There's FOSS code here, but there's issues around licensing, marketing, or transparency.

Details

The project itself is provided under an GPLv3 license.

The issue here is that the project/website lists many non-open-source projects as open source, potentially misleading users and helping to erode the meaning of open source by promoting projects which don’t provide the rights afforded by open source.

This has been raised on GitHub, but these have ben retained under the reasoning:

While I agree that this may not align 100% with the Open Source Definition, I believe there is still a lot of value we can derive from these codebases/companies, so I would like to keep them visible on the site.

The project appears to receive revenue from “custom partnerships” and advertisements, including from those which would not be widely considered as open source like n8n and Preline . During discussions, the project author had said:

I just removed N8N as it’s clearly not open source.

But as of writing it’s shown as an ad while also the first option on the homepage. The first options on the homepage appear to be those also shown as “Featured projects”, with the text “OpenAlternative is made possible by the following supporters:”, but their sponsor status is not indicated in that homepage listing.
