There's FOSS code here, but there's issues around licensing, marketing, or transparency.

Details

The project provides a FOSS core offering provided under an AGPLv3 license, which is often labelled as the Plausible Community Edition (CE). The project provides extra features as part of their cloud offering.

The feature differences in the offerings are somewhat mentioned in the project readme but does not seem extensive, or at least clear, with the information starting with “Selected premium features such as”.

The project markets itself as open source, with 4 mentions on the homepage but no mentions of the difference in offerings. The first reference in the homepage hero section is just above a “Get started” button which leads to a sign-up for the cloud offering. The homepage advertises its “Funnels” feature which appear to only be part of the non-FOSS service offering.

The project has a page about being open source, which does not mention the difference in offerings. The same is true about their about page, where they also use AGPLv3 as a reasoning for not being “evil”.

The project split out the CE & EE offerings from a single AGPLv3 offering in February 2024. When queried on GitHub, A maintainer did confirm that they emailed existing contributors to handover the rights needed, at least for those which provided over 10 lines to “product code”. They did not respond to a follow-up question asking if they gained consent from all without much trouble.

The project appears to be funded from providing its software as a service, and from donations. In regards to venture capital funding, the project states:

We’re not interested in venture capitalism, in the chase for the endless hyper-growth, or in building a unicorn. We don’t have any goals about world domination.
