is it really FOSS?

Redis

An in-memory data store

Partially
A significant, clearly defined, core part of project is free and open source.

Details

The core project (as of Redis 8) is provided under a license which provides between a choice of three difference license terms:

  • AGPLv3
  • Redis Source Available License 2.0 (RSALv2) Agreement
    • This is a non-FOSS license which limits use, modification & distribution.
  • Server Side Public License (SSPL)
    • This is a non-FOSS license which attempts to hinder SASS-based distribution.

The core project was previously provided under the BSD 3-clause license, before moving to an option of the RSALv2 or SSPL in March 2024, before then adding the AGPLv3 option in May 2025.

The project is advertised and provided under different variations, which are labelled “Redis Open Source” and “Redis Software”, that latter of which appears to have many extra features while not being FOSS. Those separate labels are not used always used though, with many references just being “Redis”. This is apparent in their FOSS codebase readme, but there is specific guidance there regarding “Redis Open Source”. A comparison page is provided to show the differences between the versions.

Uses of “open source” on their website do seem to be specific to the FOSS variation, and there is also specific documentation and distribution/download options for the FOSS variation.

The project appears to have raised at least $347m from investors who include Bain Capital Ventures, Carmel Ventures, Dell Technologies Capital, Francisco Partners, Goldman Sachs Growth, Silicon Valley Bank, SoftBank Vision Fund 2, TCV, Tiger Global, Viola Ventures.
