The project is built and governed by its community. There is also the Rust Foundation which describes itself as a “independent nonprofit steward of the Rust programming language and ecosystem”. This foundation appears to be funded by selling memberships which provides various benefits at different tiers, with the highest providing a seat on the foundation’s Board of Directors as a “Member Director”. Companies that are a member of this tier include Amazon, Google, Huawei, Meta & Microsoft. The foundation balances these “Member Directors” in equal measure with elected “Project Directors”.
