is it really FOSS?

Uninbox

Issues exist
There's FOSS code here, but there's issues around licensing, marketing, or transparency.

Details

The project is provided under an AGPLv3 license mixed with a non-FOSS commercial license.

The project appears to have a (somewhat minor) case of the FOSS code depending on non-FOSS licensed code.

The readme is misleading in regards to the requirements of the AGPLv3, stating:

Clone the repo into a public GitHub repository (or fork https://github.com/un/inbox/fork). If you plan to distribute the code, keep the source code public to comply with AGPLv3. To clone in a private repository, contact us to acquire a commercial license

This is while the ability to simply clone to a private repository is well within the AGPLv3 (and any FOSS license) terms.

These issues were raised on Reddit with responses by the maintainer, but the issues were not addressed

The project has since entered “Community Maintenance Mode” in October 2024.

Investment in the project is not clear, but VC relation is likely as founders appear to be connected to the VC-heavy “oss/acc” group. Otherwise, it looks like the project gains revenue from providing the software as a service.
